Event summary and key learnings

  • Precision oncology is changing how we diagnose cancer, how we choose treatments, how we define prognosis and how patients experience care—here in Canada and around the world.

  • It allows us to examine the genetic code of a tumour to understand exactly what is driving that cancer and tailor treatments to each person’s individual genetic, molecular, and biological characteristics.

  • With the support of theLed by the Terry Fox Research Institute and the Terry Fox Foundation, the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network is uniting patients, researchers and clinicians from across the country, to accelerate the implementation of precision oncology in Canada.

  • As the ultimate recipients of precision oncology, cancer patients should play a central role in determining how we implement it across.

    Important Information

What is the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network?

The Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network (also known as the MOHCCN or “the Network”) is a pan-Canadian initiative led by the Terry Fox Research Institute and the Terry Fox Foundation and funded by the Government of Canada and over 100 partner institutions across the country. Inspired by Terry Fox, the Network’s main goal is to unite cancer researchers, clinicians, patients and administrators from institutions across Canada under a single vision: to improve outcomes and quality of life of cancer patients by accelerating the implementation of precision medicine for cancer.

What is the MOHCCN Patient Working Group?

From its inception, the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network has sought to embed the voices of patients, survivors and caregivers at all levels of its operations. This vision was formalized with the launch of the Patient Working Group (PWG) in 2023. Since then, PWG members have participated in the Network’s governance, its research initiatives and national and regional scientific forums, meaning that individuals with lived experience contribute to Network funding decisions, working groups, conferences and outreach activities across the country. This deep and sustained engagement strengthens the relevance, accessibility and impact of the Network’s work, ensuring that precision oncology in Canada is shaped not only for patients, but with them.
